The new (used) car gave me that wonderful sound that every car owner learns to dread. Its the sound that I call the great barrier reef. The sound was first described to me when I was in the navy, by a shipmate who called it the worst sound he had ever heard in his life. It was the sound of his ship scraping over the great barrier reef around australia. Definitely a sound that grabs your attention.
In my case, it was just the brake pads giving up the fight. Took it to sears auto. My regular mechanic has retired, and the fellow he referred me too said he doesn't do volvos. Put it up on the lift and instead of needing a couple sets of pads, I needed four new rotors, four new calipers, and the pads. Ended up costing me $1160 bucks! Yikes! That was the money I was planning on living on for the next couple of weeks of no work. I foresee a lot of ramen noodles in my future.
Then to add insult to injury, they tell me that whomever did the brakes last time have fouled them up by misinstalling the parts, and that the emergency brake system ( which is a completely separate set of pads ) is on it's last legs, and I should take it to a volvo dealer for repair. Oy! And I still need to buy some new tires for the thing.

Hiya! Back from holidays. Hope your NYE was good. Mine was less than sterling considering I spent it sick with food poisoning in a 5 start hotel in Milan. (I suppose it could have been worse since it could have been the less and 2 star hotel we'd been in the previous day in Florence. But then, I suspect that is where said food poisoning originated.)

I assume you will be attending Arisia this year? Are you staying at the hotel or commuting in each day? (We will be commuting this year to save money, care for pets, avoid con-overload syndrome, etc.) [livejournal.com profile] halleyscomet is planning to do the Hygene ninja routine again this year. And he has 2 other folks who want to be ninjas as well. We brought back what we could from hotels in Italy. Dr. K has collected stuff from hotels all year long for us. So we should have a small supply of materials to work with. So, you game to join in the anonymous ninja fun again? Drop a comment to Halleyscomet and let him know so he can coordinate crew and materials.

Glad you are better, sorry you got sick on your trip.
Going to arisia, staying at the hotel. I still have some of the hygiene ninja droppings, I can go dig them out and bring them to the con if you want. I probably will be too busy much of the con to help, but I don't know what is going to happen for sure. Had a job interview last week,
and I haven't heard back from them yet. *crosses fingers*
