Just got home from the hospital again. Dad is back in the hospital with urinary problems that if you really want the icky medical details, you will have to click on the LJ cut thingy. they are treating him, and even in the couple of hours of treatment in the ER he was getting less confused. He's up in a ward at the hospital, they were considering admitting him to the ICU, but decided a regular room should be okay. So my new plans for this weekend are to go to the hospital, and to take care of mom and house stuff.

But it seems that he stopped peeing, maybe a couple days ago. The urine backed up into the kidneys and they couldn't work, so he has been retaining toxins in his blood, along with all the anticoagulants. He didn't mention that he hadn't been peeing, so we really had no idea what was going on, except that he was just gradually losing body and brain function from the toxins building up in his body.

My brother and sister took dad to his doctor this morning, doctor looked at him and a few tests and said get thee to the hospital. So they took dad back to hospital and he was seen in the ER. They cat scanned and ultrasounded him, and when they put the foley catheter in, they got out three liters of urine. This quantity of urine was rather astounding to the ER staff. And in the next couple of hours, they got out another couple of liters of urine. the nurses and doctors all were amazed, commented that they had never heard of that much in such a short time from someone.

The continuing urine flow is a good sign, as it means his kidneys are still working. The ER doc looked at the blood tests, ordered a blood transfusion. He was also peeing a lot of blood in the urine, likely from the anticoagulants. Just in the couple of hours I was there this evening after work with him, he seemed to be improving mentally, which makes me optimistic.

I expect that the main treatment is to fill him with a lot of IV fluids so that his kidneys can get rid of all the accumulated toxins. Then work on getting his blood chemistry back on track, and then restart his anticoagulants to get the blood clot in his leg taken care of. I'm guessing he will be in the hospital for a couple days, maybe a week or so, to get the clotbuster drugs into him without killing him.

Yowser. Just what you wanted...more. Yikes.

Do be sure to get yourself some breaks in all of this. The loop-de-loops of dual medical rollercoaster rides are hard on the system and sense of equilibrium.

Hugs.

Oy, that's rough, on you and your siblings as well. You know it may be time to discuss assisted living situations with your parents and your siblings.
