I come home from work today to find a cryptic message to call a phone number about another number. I call them and it's a collection agency. They are trying to collect the fraudulent debt that earthlink accumulated after I cancelled my account with them. (Having switched to FIOS with Verizon. ) Earthlink in a unfortunately all to common display of their level of competence, failed to actually stop the billing cycle on my account when I canceled my account. One of the many reasons that I had switched to FIOS.

If I can rememebr correctly, I actually had a positive balance with them when I called to cancel the account. A few weeks later, I got the envelope from earthlink, and it contained an invoice, not a check. I call and explain that I've cancelled the account. Oh no problem, we'll fix that in our computers and you should get a new invoice with coreected information. Nope, I got a invoice with a larger number and a past due notice threatening to cut off my service.
this didn't bother me, as they were no longer delivering any service, since the line that I had been getting the DSL on was now switched over to FIOS, and could not support DSL. When I called again, tried to explain this to the phone person, and was airily assured that things would be fixed and the account finally closed. That's where it stood several months ago.

Well, they stopped sending me bills, and just sold the debt to a collection agency. When I tried to explain to the collection agency person what had happened, he insisted that the only information he had was that the debt was from earthlink and it was past due. After I asked for a letter with all the information from him, and he said that they didn't need to send the letter, as this phone call constituted first collection effort. I got more insistant saying that I wasn't going to give them a dime over the phone under any circumstances, and that without a letter from them, I couldn't put together my package of information I was going to send to the state attoerny general's consumer protection unit, so please send me the information. Things got a little more unpleasant and now I'm up here venting a bit over the amazing arrogance of Earthlink and the collection agency. I've never been threataned in such a nice tone of voice before. sheesh!
