That was frustrating... and smoky.
Aug. 3rd, 2015 11:54 pmLurking in the back of my fridge for the last couple of months was a big jar of strawberry ice cream topping. I used a lot of it on my ice cream, and so did my parents, but we still had lots left, and I was getting worried that it would turn into a biology mystery culture, so I've been pondering ways to make use of it, since I was getting tired of putting strawberry sauce on my ice cream.
This past week, I had my AHA! moment. I could turn it into fruit leather snacks. It was already pureed, so the hardest part (and messiest) was already done. It's an easy recipie, puree fruit, line a baking pan with plastic wrap, pour in a layer of fruit puree, put in the over on a warm setting for a few hours to dry it out. So that's what I did sunday night after supper.
As I was getting ready to sleep, I checked it, still not done, so I left the oven on the lowest setting overnight. Checked it this morning, solid now, but not very chewy, so I left it in the oven and warned my mom that I had left it in the oven, and would take care of it when I got home from work.
So I'm driving home from work, eagerly anticipating strawberry fruit leather for dessert after supper. I get home, and the house smells of smoke. I ask what happened. Mom says she asked the home health aide that we have mondays to clean the oven. Mom insists that she took it out of the oven before they started cleaning. But somehow, the tray full of fruit leather got put back into the oven when they started the cleaning cycle.
So I had been looking around the house for my tray of fruit leather, and finally unlock the still hot oven and look inside. There is the baking tray, with a pumicelike layer of ash that risen up about two to three inches above the tray as the stuff dried out and then got carbonized.
*Heavy sigh of disappointment*
Carefully, I picked up the tray of ex fruit leather, and carefully walked out the back door and dumped the big lump of ash into the swamp. I have no idea if the tray got ruined, as the film of plastic wrap got burned up along with the strawberry goo. I'll run it through the dishwasher a couple of times and assess it then.
I am unhappy. I was soooo anticipating eating the stuff.
