Independence Day weekend.
Jul. 6th, 2014 09:30 pmHurray for fireworks! I'm also a fan of the USA, despite it's many faults, I really can't imagine wanting to be a citizen anywhere else.
Here in Boston, hurricane A was making it's way up the east coast, so pretty much everything around the area scheduled for the 4th got moved up to the 3rd or postponed to the 5th. Thursday the 3rd, I went to the fireworks in SOmerville, conveniently located a couple blocks from the NESFA clubhouse. Fireworks were lovely, and waiting in the air conditioned, mosquito-free clubhouse was far more pleasant than milling about on the streets for hours.
The Boston Pops fireworks got moved up to thursday also, and I was listening to the live broadcast driving home from somerville. They had folks watching weather radar, and a cell was coming fast. So the 1812 overture got cut and the fireworks started early. I'm told that the last shells went off as the wind was picking up, and most of the crowd made it to cover before the downpour hit.
I was watching the lightning show ahead of me driving home, and encountered the downpour about a mile from my home. It went from dry to downpour in about thirty seconds, and that last mile driving home took about ten minutes to complete, the rain was so heavy that I was slowed down to a crawl and was only able to pick out the sides of the road as I was starting to leave the pavement. Getting out of my car and running the hundred feet to the front door left me soaked to the skin.
The rest of the weekend was basically sitting at home. MOst of my friends are off at conventions this weekend, so nothing really to do but a few chores around the house. I do hope all my friends at conventions had lots of fun this weekend. Back to work monday morning. ugh.
