Obligitory 9/11 anniversry posting.
Sep. 11th, 2011 03:07 pmToday, I'm sitting here in a NESFA meeting, immmersed in the tedious details of the business of NESFA. Ten years ago today, we all know what happened to the airliners turned into kamikaze.
It was an ordinary tuesday morning for me. Running a little late for work, and I flipped on the TV to watch that while I was nobbling on breakfast. They broke away to breaking news that an airplane had crashed into the tower in NYC. I was like, well, that sucks, but it's not the first time an airplane crashed into a skyscraper in NYC.
Then a little later, live on the TV, another airliner crashed into the other tower. And the shit was officially hitting the fan. And all the stuff we now know that happened following that.
It's been a pretty crappy ten years, both personally and for the country and the world. I got laid off for christmas 2001, starting a 4 1/2 year time of un and semi-employment. That wiped out my savings and put me pretty deeply into debt, which I have finally paid off. The payoff process led to me cutting way back on my lifestyle, and I now have a job that pays rather less than I used to make. The various financial hits to the stock market also drastically cut the value of my 401k fund. That's gonna make my retirement years a lot poorer. *sighs*
While I'm glad that we did finally get BinLaden. And that the life expectancy of terrorist group leaders is pretty short, once they come to the attention of the US government. I hope that the haters learn not to hate, or become examples of evolution in action.
Please, I hope that the next ten years are a lot better for all of us.
