Drank the FIOS koolaid.
Sep. 22nd, 2007 08:58 amYesterday the Verizon techs showed up to install my FIOS. Signed up for phone, internet, and cable TV from them. They showed up, of course, at 5:30 pm. Schedule was 8am-5pm. My dad stayed home to wait for them so I wouldn't miss a day of work. When I got home about 615, they had pulled in the fiber from the street, attached the demarc and demuxer to the outside of the house, and were looking in the basement for an outlet to plug in the power supply.
I pointed to the outlet that was nearby, but buried in junk that had been removed from where I expected the demarc to be installed, inside our utility room. They put the battery box inside the house. I'll have to go look at it today to see what I can do about increasing the battery supply. six hours of backup battery is not what I consider sufficient.
Phone line was on the expected copper pair, which they put onto the old demarc, which brought it into my existing inside house wiring. Cable TV and internet were brought in over coax to the TV, where TV box and internet access router were attached.
The techs were preparing to run cables up the outside of the house for the upstairs TV and to the computer upstairs when I told them to stop that. I'll run the cables inside the house myself. Their relief was noticeable when I told them that. They left me a hunk of coax for the upstairs TV and put the router next to the downstairs TV.
The lack of communication between the techs and the people taking the orders was appalling. i told the order takers that I would run all the inside cables. Was very insistent, repeating myself a couple of times. I did not want our house wrapped in coax as so many are nowadays. *sighs* My non-technical father forgot also that I asked him to not let the techs put in any cable other than the optical fiber to the demarc and coax to the downstairs TV.
they also did not have any DVR set top boxes, so I only got regular ones. I had ordered one of them to be a DVR box. *sighs*
In other news, planning proceeds apace for the National Folk Festival in a couple weeks. the site layout changes are making things difficult, but not much more than expected. Anyone who is near to Richmond, VA from October 6-16th, come on down to the site and say hi. (Tredegar Iron Works national historical site and Browns Island. Look for the office and storage trailers off of tredegar street. )
