Thoughts on the Virginia Tech shootings.
Apr. 17th, 2007 09:29 pmHere it is, about 36 hours after the nutjob removed himself from the gene pool. Not, unfortunately, until after he had murdered 32 others, and wounded many more. As expected, the anti-gun crowd are out in full force, dancing in the blood of the victims to push their political agenda. I cannot begin to describe the disgust I feel at those people, using the blood of the victims, the victims who were disarmed by the administration of Virginia Tech, to make more disarmed victims of the rest of us.
My friends who work at Virginia Tech are all safe, and I wish that the friends and families of the 32 murder victims could say the same. But it was only the luck of the draw that spared my friends. The nutjob may have decided that their department was the one he was going to target, rather than where he did go. They had no defense other than to stay inside and lock the doors, had they somehow known that there was a shooter out on campus. Of course, the shooter, being a student and living on campus, likely could have gotten into locked buildings anyway. By bluffing his way in, or by having obtained a key previously.
Virginia has a concealed handgun license system in place. YOu have to pay a fee, pass some tests, and not be a convicted felon, underage, mentally incompetent, and a few other disqualifiers. ONce you have that permit, you are licensed to carry your concealed handgun for your self defense, pretty much everywhere in the state. But the administration of Virginia Tech, decided in their ivory tower invincibility, that this state issued license was not valid at Virginia Tech, a state university. A number of concerned citizens of Virgina tried to gat an addendum to the state concealed handgun permit law passed that specifically said that the permit was valid on campus. Extended lobbying by the university administration, at taxpayer expense, as well as the usual propagandizers from the anti-gun forces got that killed in the legislature. Leaving the staff and students at Virginia Tech in a large, well-known disarmed victim zone.
There have been other school shootings. I do notice that when the list them, they don't mention the two that were stopped by individuals at the scene. Stopped when they had to go out to the parking lot to their cars, unlock them, retrieve their legally licensed firearms, load them and then return to find the shooter and confront them. Both times the shooters stopped immediately, with the defenders not even having to fire their own weapon, and were held for the arrival of the police.
Israel had some very bloody terrorist shootings at their schools many years ago. They taught all the teachers in the school how to shoot and gave them licenses to carry handguns while they were at school, as well as parental volunteer armed security. Since then, the terrorists have chosen less well defended targets. There might be a lesson there. Hmmmm?
I know that there will be people I know, freinds and acquaintances reading this journal, who will be shocked and amazed. Some will now believe that I am some kind of monster who spends his time rubbing his guns and fantasizing about how many people he can shoot before he gets stopped. It will be totally false, but they have swallowed the propaganda of the anti-gun forces that somehow the guns emit evil mind control rays that turn their owners into wanna-be mass murderers. Ignoring the fact that the one time I went hunting, I couldn't bring myself to actally shoot at the animal. I hope and pray that I never have to make the decision to use lethal force to defend myself or a loved one. I have no idea if I'll be able to do so should that horrible circimstance come about. But I'd much rather have the option to do so, instead of just waiting there for the shooter to get to me.
We don't know if any of the people in the path of that nutjob at Virginia Tech yesterday had or would have gotten concealed handgun licenses. We don't know if an armed citezen there could have stopped him earlier. We will never know as long as the cowards running the place continue to create and perpetuate disarmed victim zones. Funny how these mass shootings don't seem to happen in police stations, or gun stores, or anyplace else where there is a high probability of the folks there having handguns readily available to them. I guess they are immune to the evil mind control rays or something.
