I was wrong.

Even though I bought the new sump pump, the water came into the basement again today. But the new sump pump does work. Only annoyance is that it's a submersible model, so if it is not underwater, it will over temp and shut itself off every ten minutes or so. The method I used was to unplug it when it does this, and then put it into a bucket of water to cool off for a few minutes, then put the pump back into the water on the floor and plug it back in.

that wetvac I mentioned the other post. Still not in stock at my local Lowes store. I'm tempted to just order it online.

Got the water pumped down to about half an inch and decided to call it a night. It's still raining so new water is gonna seep in overnight anyway, no point in fighting with my dad's junky wetvac to get the puddles that are just gonna fill in overnight anyway. I think I'll be late to work tomorrow though.

Arrgh.

I'm still reasonably dry indoors here. Knocking wood, and All That Jazz...

If things go as planned, I'll have three flood refugees from Mattapan later today.

Got up early. Pretty much the same as it was last night, maybe a little more. Hard to judge really. Ran the pump for a bit while I patched up my dad's wetvac with gaffers tape, and created an adapter out of tape to attach the long pool vacuum hose to it. Pump started sucking air so I switched over to the wet vac. It's working, just slowly. Left it sucking on the puddles while I went upstairs to shower and get dressed for work. I'll dump it out and relocate the sucking end to a lower spot on my way out the door in a few minutes.

Commute is looking joyous.... Not. Roads closed all over the place from what I hear on the radio. *sighs* But it's better than mudslides, forest fires and earthquakes. *laughs*

Thanks. Floodwater isn't my problem. While the house is on a swamp, there is no major waterways running through or connecting to the swamp closely enough that water is going to back up into it. It's all groundwater seeping in through cracks in the foundation. Once things dry out more, I'm going to be seriously considering where to place a sump and sump pump in the basement. Main thing is I want to only make the sump about an inch or so deep, so I don't end up breaking through the floor slab. Running a discharge pipe to the outside is easy. We built this house, so we remember pretty well all the internal construction details.
