Well, the much anticipated internal investigation by the Penn State chosen investigator has been released. google up a link if you really want to read all the details of the cover up by the entire leadership pack of the university. What comes through loud and clear as I read through it was that they were willing to cover up the abuse and rape incidents so as to preserve the football program and the importance of the football program to the university at large.
So, I think that the NCAA needs to go hold those people responsible in a way that the jocks and the jock culture who run these programs will actually recognize. Monetary penalties to the university are forgotten after a year or so by everyone but the accountants. They need to penalize the program in the only way that they actually will care about ten or twenty or thirty years from now.
The NCAA should retroactively rule that the Penn State football program and all the players, coaches and managers are ineligible for competition for every year since the first documented case of child abuse by the coach and covered up by the rest of the program. All those championships are revoked. All the stats for those players, coaches and the program are erased from the record books. Every damn thing removed from the NCAA record books on Penn State for those years, replaced with an entry that the program was ruled ineligible because of corrupt and immoral practices by the coaching staff and covered up by the athletic department leadership. The football program is to be ineligable for NCAA recognition for a couple of years, and should they choose to continue it after the suspension, they are on probation for ten more years. The entire athletic department is on probation for the next few years.
Yes, this is painting with a broad brush. The jock culture doesn't recognize individual punishments, they rationalize them away with a sophistry that is amazing to behold. So the blot must descend on the entire program, and extend to the damage that the university will take from this. That way, the lesson will actually stick in the teflon-coated minds of the jocks running athletic programs in the future.
