No gas service on my street. My grandfather disliked the danger gas posed and never put it in on the streets and houses he built. Our hot water comes from an auxiliary tank that gets it's heat from a water loop from the oil furnace. The old gas heaters that have a pilot light use no external electrical power. The small amount of power they need is generated from a thermocouple that is heated by the pilot light. The new on demand type gas hot water heaters, some of them don't need external power because the minimal power needed is generated by the flow of water through the heater. I added up the cost of propane. I spent eighty bucks for propane refilling the tanks. More than that, as I had to replace one of the tanks that they refused to refill, but I don't count that.
