Very Local

I listen to KCBS (San Francisco all-news radio station) on the Audacy app in the mornings while I'm getting ready for the day. They localize ads, sometimes with hilarious results (like when it was serving up ads for a Portland, Oregon car dealership). For the past week or so, though, I was impressed that it was serving up an add that was localized for Lyon County, Nevada, where I live. That's pretty specialized! There's also one for a regional health service serving Carson City and Washoe, Storey, and Lyon Counties, which is a little less surprising.

Back on the Road Again

This afternoon, the auto shop called to tell me that my van was finished and I could come pay for it. It's only about five blocks from my house. (I live at the north end of Center Street; the shop is at the south end.) So I walked down there and paid the $634.83 (alternator, replacement of broken mounting bolt, service costs) and I was once again mobile.

As I was out already, I went to Walgreens to collect a prescription. The woman behind the counter complimented me on my nails. She hadn't quite seen the whole Canadian flag thing, so I showed her that and told her (truthfully) that I was promoting an event in Canada in a couple of weeks.

Lisa Back in Munich

Lisa's trip to Slovenia ended today, which a marathon trip back from Ljubljana that involved several trains and the dreaded Bus Substitution due to construction. Lisa said it took a long time and was not much fun at all.

The Crowne Plaza was a good hotel, but by process of elimination, Lisa figures that the bed linen must have been laundered with something to which she reacts badly, leaving her feeling off much of the time. It's really annoying to have a nice bed with sheets that make you sick!

She's back in Munich now and recovering before starting her next planned excursion.

Through Her Eyes

Kayla had a marvelous day out today, with a first-of-its-kind experience for her. As is more and more oten the case, I'm just along for the ride, but she's so happy that I'm just fine with it. And the earrings I bought her in Exeter looked good on her as well, I think.

Minivan Update

So just as I was getting ready to go get the battery charger and put it on the Astro yesterday, the auto repair shop called to tell me that they had a cancellation and that if I could bring the van in they could at least diagnose it. I was there in less than fifteen minutes and handed over the keys. They charged the battery and called me back just before they closed at 5:30 that afternoon, and the news is pretty good, in that it looks like a straightforward repair and not something esoteric.

The shop reports that the alternator has gone bad, and that there is a broken bolt and bracket that they will have to repair. I told them to get the most powerful alternator they can for this model of vehicle, because in particularly the air conditioning uses a whole lot of power. They won't be able to completely price it out until Monday, but it's now looking more likely that I'll get the van back sometime next week rather than having to leave it with them for all of Worldcon and find a way to get to Reno airport.

For everyone who has been helpfully suggesting that I rent a car: there are no car rental places in Fernley. This is yet another case where we are too close to Reno/Sparks. There are 20,000 people in Fernley and no car rental places, aside from U-Haul, and I did consider that if I needed something for just one day. Fallon, another 30 mi / 50 km east of here, is much smaller than Fernley but has an Enterprise Rent-a-Car agency. I know that Enterprise will pick you up, but I suspect that doesn't extend as far as getting me from Fernley.

Essentially, if you don't have a car here, you're mostly out of luck, aside from very expensive taxi service (no shared-ride airport buses here) or some specialty services (members of the Paiute Nation, elderly people), none of which for which I qualify and that are highly limited anyway. On top of that, the once-a-day bus route between Las Vegas and Reno via Tonopah has been discontinued due to a dispute between the operator and the state of Nevada, so even that incredibly inconvenient timing for their stop in Fernley isn't a possibility.

A couple of years ago, a now-closed used car lot here in Fernley had a little smart car for sale. I wish I could have bought it to have as at least a backup vehicle or runabout.

Low Battery

Those of you who follow Kayla know that when she drove to Reno yesterday, she discovered that the battery warning light had come on and the alternator gauge was very low. She shut off all accessories (lights, A/C, fan) and drove home, making it here in one piece and not having to have an awkward interaction with AAA.

This morning, I took the van to just about the only auto shop in town other than some tire shops. It's a short walk from the house and they've worked on it before. The only problem is that they can't even look at it until next Thursday morning! Even then, that's just to diagnose it. They might need it even longer depending on the diagnosis. There are lots of things that could be happening: bad alternator, bad battery, loose serpentine tensioner, and other things I don't know about, but the guy from the shop suggested a bad solenoid.

I fly to Seattle a week from Sunday. If I have to leave the van with the shop, they can have it for close to two weeks. But how do I get where I need to go? Well, Kayla's friend Dani says that they can take me to/from the airport, which is a huge relief, as a taxi ride from Fernley would be more than $100 each way!

Meanwhile, the van runs and will move, but I'm leery about doing much with it, given how low the voltage is showing. And now I need to call my dentist and put off the appointment I had for next Wednesday, because doing yet another trip to Reno is too risky, I think.

Update from Slovenia

Lisa was able to make the trip to Ljubljana, Slovenia by train. No thanks to DB, who triple-booked her seat reservation. She then moved to a compartment which was okay for a while, but then someone joined with a yappy little dog, so she spent time standing in the vestibule, which was preferable to dealing with the dog. However, she did make it. My first indication that she arrived was when IHG sent me a welcome message and credited my bonus amenity points. The room has its pluses and minuses, but it's overall a win. She managed to get a message out to me, but she doesn't have a phone. I hope she's able to see the sights and enjoy the trip.

I've been trying to book Lisa into IHG hotels when possible, as we seem to get better service from them (and the points are useful, too), but there's not always one available near the places she's going. In some cases, there is an IHG property, but it's out of town on a highway, which isn't very useful.

Ljubljana: Plan B

Aside from the €6 seat reservation fee for the train (the travel itself is on the rail pass), Lisa was not out anything by me canceling the hotel reservation that would have started today. I woke up even earlier than usual and after discussing it with Lisa, I booked her a room at the IHG Intercontinental Ljubljana, which is about the same distance from the train station as her original hotel. This of course is a much more modern, upscale hotel (with prices to match, ouch). There was no way to put her name first on the reservation online, but I called IHG and they fixed that. I then sent email to the hotel directly and told them to charge my card on file for the stay even though I'm not the one staying there. They wrote back while I was still on the phone with Lisa to confirm that they can do that. So things are looking much better for her to leave tomorrow for the same length of stay.

Lisa told me that she wasn't looking for luxury hotels for their own sake. I told her that I understood that, but sometimes to get services you might take for granted, you have to move up a class of hotel. And besides, the Intercontinental turns out to be less expensive than the IHG Holiday Inn Express across town, so go figure. Anyway, I booked the lowest class of room they have, but they might upgrade her based on my Diamond status. I don't expect to earn enough points to retain Diamond another year, so I guess we might as well use the status while we have it.

This hotel is, like the first one, only a relatively short distance (about 1200 m) from the lower station for the cable car/funicular up to the castle, so I hope Lisa gets to see that as well as the railway museum.

Scratch Ljubljana -- Maybe

Lisa's planned trip to Ljubljana, Slovakia, which was to start tomorrow, is now on hold, and I had to cancel the reservation. She called me late in her day to tell me that she'd done more research on the hotel we'd booked and discovered that there was no lift, and that all rooms were upstairs. Lisa cannot climb stairs easily, and she definitely cannot do so carrying luggage, so that made it untenable. I was able to cancel the reservation without penalty. Thank goodness we found this out before she got there!

The trip might still be able to be salvaged, though. There are other hotels (an IHG property, even) that do have lifts. By the time I could get back to the computer, Lisa had long since gone to bed (and a good thing, given how stressful today was for her), so we'll have to discuss it tomorrow. At the best case, she might leave a day later than originally planned, particularly if I can make a reservation where I made it abundantly clear that they should charge it to my credit card even though the card will not be present. We've done this before, and particularly with IHG properties. I do have Diamond status with them for the rest of this year; it would be nice to get some use out of it!

Lisa Checking In

Lisa called today to check in. It has been raining heavily in Munich, which literally puts a damper on her getting out and about. She thought she'd take a short out-and-back trip and when the first train going the direction she picked was too full, she caught the next one. That turned out to be a WESTbahn train, which is a private operator. To Lisa's annoyance, while WESTbahn honors Eurail passes, they only honor them for standard class, even if you have a first class pass. That bugged her enough that she got off at the next stop and took the next train going the other way. Now she knows to avoid that operator.

Her current plan is to not go anywhere tomorrow, after which she has a trip down to Ljubljana, Slovenia. I have confirmed with the hotel that she will be able to check in with her ID and booking information. This hotel is, someone unusually, cash only, so she has stocked up on Euros, but that should help with being able to check in.

She plans to stay four days in Ljubljana, exploring the city and seeing the railway museum. Then it's back to the apartment in Munich. It's a decently long trip each way.

Lisa and Kuma Safe in Munich

Lisa called me a little while ago to let me know that she had stayed in her apartment in Munich today resting, and that she was not on the train that derailed west of Munich today.

Bear Photos )

Lisa is traveling on a first class Eurail pass. While seat reservations are available for a fee, she has determined that as long as she rides at non-peak times, there are lots of unreserved seats in first class, so she can avoid the fee and just take a seat.

Edit: At least one person couldn't view the links I originally posted, so I downloaded the photos, then uploaded them to Flickr. I hope they're viewable now.

Cleaning Up

I went to the Wigwam restaurant this morning and had my usual Big Breakfast. Unusually, I was able to finish it all, but I didn't have much of an appetite for the rest of the day.

The coughing has sort of subsided (although I still wear a mask in public because coughing over people is anti-social and just plain stupid, and I'm not a sociopath). However, it gets worse overnight. This morning, I thoroughly disinfected the hose on my CPAP machine using a hospital-grade disinfectant I got from a CPAP supplier. It occurred to me that there might be gunk in the hose so I might have been breathing it all night.

I need to buy more the third-stage optional filters for the CPAP, as I've run out of them (they go between the mask and the hose), and the last one was really filthy. Well, I needed to make a CPAP supply order soon anyway, and it can be charged against my healthcare savings account.

Letting Her Drive

Today was mostly in Kayla's hands, with me along for the ride. There are more and more days like these days, but that's okay, and it's to be expected. Eventually, I may stop updating this journal, or at least not aiming for daily updates that way I've been doing for many years now.

Concierge for Lisa

I've been spending a fair bit of time on the phone with Lisa dealing with things. That's the internet phone she has, which she was able to plug into the wired router in her apartment in Munich, and means she has a US phone number and can make and receive calls there. We also got her a simple flip phone, identical to mine, and we know that it worked because she called me on it from Denver Airport on the way out. But it has never connected since she got to Munich, even when I added on a Verizon international service plan. So today we spent time trying to sort this out. We ended up with me on my personal phone to Verizon on speaker, while getting Lisa on my work phone on speaker, and putting the phones next to each other so she could talk to the tech support guy.

As Lisa expected (but we had to have support go through their entire support checklist), there was no SIM card in the phone. There is one in my identical phone, but not in hers. Apparently it will work as a phone on the Verizon network domestically without one, but this does explain why it wouldn't connect in Munich. She'll have to hunt up a place to sell her a SIM card with a prepaid plan for the rest of this trip.

Why the Verizon store didn't put a card in the phone, I don't know. I wasn't paying attention, and when the phone worked when we tested it in the store, I figured that was good enough.

She did have a planned trip to Berlin for which I had paid on my credit card, but when she showed up at the hotel, despite the room being in her name and my notes to the hotel explaining that they should charge me, they refused to let her check in. She had to go back to the apartment in Munich on the next train. If they charge me a broken-reservation fee, you can bet I'm going to protest that charge. And for the rest of this trip, we'll need to be extra careful about confirming that the rooms for which I paid -- and checked the "making the room arrangement for someone else" box on the forms when possible -- are actually being charged correctly. I know the apartment in Munich is paid for because the charges have hit my card.
