The hot water heater at the time (2011) was definitely original to the house, about 35 years old. We had to replace it last summer when it rusted through the bottom and started leaking. We replaced it with an almost identical one, just a little larger. We made sure we would still have hot water if the power went out again.
We had one of those hot water on demand systems when we lived in Watertown. I hated it. I could never get enough hot water for a decent shower. I would run out of hot halfway through if I didn't keep it tepid and even then it just didn't get hot enough fast enough to take a hot shower and have it stay hot. One of the criteria when we bought a house was that it had a real hot water tank and gas heat/hot water/stove. Or the option of having everything converted to gas.
